Overview
Tata Motors Limited (TML) has been regularly updating their products and launching new products to keep pace with the leaders in the Indian automobile market. In 2014 during the Indian auto expo they have unveiled the hatchback Bolt and the sedan Zest. The Zest was launched on 12th August 2014. The Zest comes in 4 petrol and 5 diesel variants.

Technical Specifications
The 5 diesel variants of the Zest are the Zest XE 75PS, the XM, the XMS, the XT and the XMA. The Zest XMA is having a 5 gear automatic and others 5 gear manual transmission. The safety features for the XT variants include two airbags for driver and co-driver, ABS and EBD.

Engine and Mileage
The engine of the diesel Zest is a 1248 cc Quadrajet engine tuned to two different powers of 74 bhp, 190 NM torque for the XE variant and 89 bhp, 200 NM torque for the other variants. The diesel engines have a mode selection switch with normal and sports drive modes to control fuel consumption with normal as default mode. In the sports mode torque will be more. The driver can select the mode as per the situation. The diesel variants of the Zest give mileages of 23.0 kmpl.

Transmission
The 3995 mm long car has 170 mm ground clearance, 390 litre boot size and 2470 mm wheel base.  The brakes are disc type at the front and the drum type at the rear. The suspension is independent McPherson strut type with coil spring at the front and the semi independent torsion beam type with coil springs at the rear.

Verdict
The diesel Zest with one AMT variant has to compete with the compact sedans like the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, the Honda Amaze and the Hyundai Xcent.
